Say hello to the new Santa Cruz Vala e-mountain bike

With the Santa Cruz Vala, the Californians are bringing a breath of fresh air to their product family. This lightweight, full-power e-MTB comes equipped with the brand-new Bosch Performance Line CX drive system – a first after all these years with Shimano!

Furthermore, the Americans have radically changed the look, ditched the VPP rear suspension, and made several other changes. Time to take a closer look at the bike. Why did we immediately fall in love with the new Santa Fe? We'll tell you here.

A Santa Cruz that doesn't look like a Santa Cruz?

The first piece of news: The typical Santa Cruz look is gone. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Over the years, even die-hard Santa Cruz fans could hardly distinguish the different models at first glance. No worries: The new full carbon frame impresses with the usual superb build quality. As much as we love e-mountain bikes like the Santa Cruz Megatower or the new Heckler SL, the new look somehow creates a special "must-have" feeling for us.

Hello Horst! (link). Bye bye VPP!

The Santa Cruz Vala e-MTB saw the first replacement of the unmistakable VPP suspension system with a four-bar linkage (Horst-Link). The reason for this radical change? The new Bosch drive unit! The clever minds at Santa Cruz wanted to perfectly balance the drive unit and the rear suspension. And the new rear suspension system offered significantly more possibilities in this regard. Between you and me: We think it's brilliant that Santa Cruz is so openly breaking new ground. Instead of following conventions, the Americans are focused on performance. And the first tests confirm: The Vala is seriously awesome!

What makes Vala so special?

With 160 mm of front and 150 mm of rear travel, the Vala absorbs pretty much everything the trails have to offer. The MX (mullet) combination of a 29" front and 27.5" rear wheel ensures intuitive, playful handling. It's a typical all-4-one e-mountain bike that loves touring as well as shredding the trails.

The Vala skillfully bridges the gap between the new Bullitt and the Santa Cruz Heckler. Looking for a bike that's agile yet capable of long distances? Voilà, the Vala is your e-mountain bike.

The new Bosch Performance Line CX motor is impressive

Surprise! Instead of Shimano, Santa Cruz has opted for the new 5th generation Bosch Performance Line CX motor for the Vala. A good decision. From the user interface and app connectivity to the performance itself, Bosch has really outdone themselves. The biggest highlight: the new e-bike motor is significantly quieter than its predecessor. The new drive system also boasts the familiar Bosch power and excellent efficiency.

With a 600 Wh battery capacity, the Vala e-mountain bike offers a wonderful balance of low weight and ample power reserves. Our prediction: You'll have plenty of juice even on the toughest climbs. And should you need to go longer, further, or higher, the optional range extender (+250 Wh battery) will solve most energy problems.

Give it a good push, but don't overdo it.
In short: The riding experience is wonderfully natural. The new Bosch motor is impressive uphill and always has more than enough power in reserve. Even on steep sections, there's almost always sufficient power available. Best of all: The new drive system – along with the improved yet more compact Bosch PowerTube batteries – gives the Santa Cruz Vala an almost "natural" look. The days of bulky e-bike behemoths are finally over.

Great geometry, great new frame

Santa Cruz didn't skimp on details with the Valla. The solid, one-piece rocker arm and the tapered axle clamps ensure that the Vala handles even the nastiest terrain with ease. The low center of gravity also gives the bike an extra dose of agility – especially in combination with the 27.5" rear wheel.

Up to 63.9° steering angle and strong chassis

Transform yourself with the flip chip! The Santa Cruz Vala e-mountain bike is incredibly versatile. Bottom bracket height, head angle, and rear triangle progression: you can experiment and adjust all of these settings. And because Santa Cruz has also equipped the Vala with a robust, well-engineered suspension system, this latest e-MTB is practically ready to ride right out of the box.
Good basic equipment (except for the brakes)

The entry-level R-Kit comes equipped with the simple yet excellent RockShox ZEB Base suspension fork and a FOX Float X Performance shock. However, we recommend upgrading the SRAM DB8 Stealth brakes. They don't always keep up with the bike's speed. Our tip: the SRAM Maven Bronze Stealth MTB brakes, which are also found on the higher-priced models. They offer significantly more stopping power and better feedback.
S-Kit is worth it again

The popular S-Kit variant already comes with the FOX Float 38 suspension fork with Performance Grip cartridge, while the FOX 38 Factory with Grip X2 cartridge is the highlight in the high-end Vala XX ASX RSV version.
Great: The Vala also offers the fantastic Reserve carbon wheels as an option. Furthermore, Santa Cruz equips the higher-priced models with the new SRAM GX Eagle AXS T-Type 12-speed, the SRAM X0 Eagle AXS T-Type 12-speed, and the SRAM XX Eagle AXS T-Type 12-speed derailleurs.
Well-equipped, well hidden: The Tool Mount

Okay, there's no glove box because of the battery, but still! Do you want your most important tool always at hand without having to fumble around? The tool mount hidden in the top tube is almost as good. Tube, tools, or snacks – the tool mount easily holds it all and literally has your back free.
